WHO IS PAOLA COLETTO?
As a graduate of the École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris, she studied a physical approach to theatre creation and is one of 40 students in the school’s 50-year history to have been certified as a pedagogical specialist under Lecoq’s direction.
“You will never meet anyone more present to teach the art of being present. Paola is a guru of comedy and theater. She finds a depth in the work I didn’t even know existed. Working with here feels like taking a submarine into comedy when I had just been floating on the surface the whole time. If she charged a million dollars it wouldn’t be enough. I am completely changed by her, both as an artist and a person.” – JET EVELETH
WHO IS MARCOS MARTINEZ?
Marcos Martinez has 22 years working experience with the Suzuki Method of Actor Training. He has taught Suzuki Method since 1991 in many countries throughout the globe. Mr. Martinez trained with Tadashi Suzuki and his company in Toga-mura, Japan on several occasions since 1985, when he also performed in a bilingual production of Clytemnestra directed by Mr. Suzuki. In 2009 Mr. Martinez was invited by Tadashi Suzuki to write an article dealing with the intent and purpose of his training method for actors. That same year he was invited to organize a symposium resulting in a book articulating the most recent elaboration of the Suzuki Method of Actor Training with Mr. Suzuki’s Company in Toga, Japan (2010).
“I have been working as a professional actor in theatre, film and television for over 15 years and my foundation is rooted in the Suzuki Method of Actor Training. Suzuki has given me a sense of calm, expansive energy and an explosive stillness in rehearsal, on stage and in front of the camera. The rigors of the training have been instrumental to me in finding a sense of ease and the will to continue through the run of a show or a demanding role. The Suzuki Method erases the border between the brain the body; unifying them. For me, the most important lesson the training reinforces is unselfishness because an actor’s energy and focus is always reaching out to the other actors, to the audience. It’s about the relationship of what is outside of the actor, thus making the actor hypersensitive to impulses that come from the very depths of the earth and through the body. Of any method that I have studied, the Suzuki Method of Actor Training has given me the grace to embrace any character and the courage to walk in their shoes.”
THE NEUTRAL MASKMASTER CLASS WITH PAOLA COLETTOThe Neutral Mask is a pedagogical tool that serves as a fundamental reference point for all mask and performance work. It proposes to the artist an experience grounded in a state of balance, calm and silence: the here and now of space. Once worn, it allows each participant to experience the neutral state that precedes action; a heightened state of awareness devoid of internal conflict, as the Neutral Mask has no past or future – it exists in a conscious state of presence. When the artist touches this neutral state, the body becomes “a blank page, available for the forthcoming drama to be written” (Jacques Lecoq, The Moving Body). The Neutral Mask is a perfect starting point for the creation of all theatre work. |
SUZUKI METHOD OF ACTOR TRAININGMASTER CLASS WITH MARCOS MARTINEZThe Suzuki Method of Actor Training (not to be confused with the violin training technique) was developed by Tadashi Suzuki, Artistic Director of the Suzuki Company of Toga. This method of training actors has been taught throughout the world and many of the top actor training programs in the U.S. have, or continue to employ this training method. The Suzuki Method of Actor Training was created to restore the body’s inner sensibilities and expressive capability while expanding the actor’s physical awareness and expressive power for a very new and powerful stage presence. The work requires no prior experience except a desire to grow through self engagement, creative risk, and hard work. |
